SNOEZEL Everyone - healthy or otherwise - needs to experience things in order to stimulate the senses and thus the brain. If the brain's sensory perception is impaired, this can adversely affect motor function, behaviour and the ability to learn. The term 'Snoezel' originated in Holland in the 1970s and is a a way of helping the disabled and other people suffering from sensory disturbance. The word is a combination of two Dutch words - 'Sniffelen' and 'Doezelen', which mean to smell and to snooze/sleep.
Today, the word is most often used to describe a sensory room found in many institutions which is used for a variety of educational and therapeutic goals such as relaxation, sensory stimulation as well as physio- and psychotherapy.
